The efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of substance abuse and drug withdrawal has been amply demonstrated to the scientific community. While many still regard acupuncture with scepticism, clinical trials and scientific investigations have proven its effectiveness. In fact acupuncture has become standard procedure in many detoxification programs worldwide.

However, the mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of addiction remain relatively obscure.

In the 1980s, a group of acupuncture practitioners formed the Society of Biophysical Medicine whose work included a re-examination of the use of electrical stimulation for the treatment of drug addictions from first principles.

They realised that two different families of mechanisms were at work: one relating to the acupuncture system and another relating to the frequency of the pulses making up the electrostimulation treatment.
